Year 9 Technologies Courses

Food Technology

Duration: One semester Lessons per fortnight: 8

Food Technology empowers students to understand where their food comes from, how it is produced, and how they can make informed, ethical, and sustainable choices in the kitchen. This subject blends hands-on cooking skills with an exploration of nutrition, food systems, and the global challenges of feeding a growing population.

Through engaging and practical sessions, students will learn to prepare nutritious meals, understand the basics of safe food handling, and explore the impact of food choices on personal health and the environment. The course is ideal for students interested in food, health, sustainability, and developing essential life skills.

Design Lab

Duration: One semester Lessons per fortnight: 8

In this hands-on elective, students will reimagine the world around them by designing and producing creative solutions to real-world challenges. From sustainable products to personal projects, students will experiment with modern materials and tools, blending imagination with practical skills to bring their ideas to life.

Working across a range of materials including wood and plastics, students will explore how ethical and sustainable design can impact our environment, communities, and future industries. No prior experience is required – just a willingness to problem-solve, prototype, and explore the potential of design thinking.

Game Design

Duration: One semester Lessons per fortnight: 8

Game Design offers students an exciting opportunity to step into the world of interactive media. This subject introduces the key roles and tools involved in creating video games, allowing students to collaborate in teams to plan, build, and refine their own playable projects.

Whether you're a coder, artist, or designer, this subject lets you explore the many creative and technical elements that go into modern game development. You will take part in every stage of the process including designing characters, coding mechanics, building environments, and shaping narratives all while working together as a development team.

VEX Robotics

Duration: One semester Lessons per fortnight: 8

Want to be an engineer? Like programming and mechanics? VEX Robotics provides a hands-on platform for students to design, build, and test robotic systems. By programming and assembling physical robots, you’ll gain a clear understanding of how code interacts with hardware to control movement, sensors, and mechanisms.

This subject blends creativity, logic, and technical knowledge. With access to real VEX robotic kits and equipment, students will tackle real-world problems and develop functional robotic solutions that perform specific tasks. You’ll also explore how forces, motion, and mechanical systems can be harnessed to produce efficient, ethical, and sustainable outcomes.

Year 10 Technologies Courses

Food Technology

Duration: One semester Lessons per fortnight: 8

Food Technology in Year 10 is all about preparing you for Food Studies (VCE pathway) or Vocational (jobs/skills based) pathways such as kitchen operations, commercial cookery or hospitality. Explore how food works from a food science lens, while expanding on your current knowledge of food safety and hygiene, dietary requirements, nutrition and health.

Design your own food truck menu item as you work through the design process to meet the needs of the local community. Complete case study tasks where you use food to solve issues or problems that support good health and wellbeing. You will be cooking once every two weeks, and your cooking lessons support the learning you do in your theory classes.

This subject is not just about cooking and eating, and is a great subject for those interested in health, wellbeing and nutrition, sport and performance, food and ingredients and design.

Product Design

Duration: One semester Lessons per fortnight: 8

Product design is a subject where students take a solutions-based approach to the diverse needs and opportunities of individuals, society and the environment by designing products fit for purpose.

Students will learn and use the design process to identify real needs and opportunities for designing, engineering, making and evaluating products.

This introduces students to the manufacturing process and end-to-end skills around design and marketing.

Students completing this subject will have the ability to undertake VCE Product Design and Technology and express it using one of the practical modes (wood, metal, textiles).

Applied Computing

Duration: One semester Lessons per fortnight: 8

In Applied Computing, students develop strategies and techniques for creating designed solutions to meet identified problems, needs and opportunities.

Students gain knowledge of key, in demand disciplines: data analytics, programming, emerging and innovative technologies and cyber security.

Legal and ethical responsibilities are also considered at individual and organisational levels to ensure solutions protect intellectual property and the privacy of data and information.

Digital Technology

Duration: One semester Lessons per fortnight: 8

In Digital Technology, students consider how human interactions with networked systems introduces complexities surrounding access to, and the security and privacy of, data of various types.

Students regularly review processes and consider client needs when developing digital solutions.

Students will have the opportunity to analyse problems and design, develop and evaluate a range of digital solutions, such as database-driven websites and artificial intelligence engines and simulations.
