Mathematics develops subject knowledge and practical skills that connect with further study, training and work.

Mathematics Pathways

The Mathematics Subject Flowchart helps you and your child explore the different pathways within the field of Mathematics. Whether it’s General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods, or Specialist Mathematics, the flowchart highlights how each subject develops essential skills in problem-solving, logical thinking, and data analysis. These skills are highly valued across all areas of study and a wide range of careers. It’s a clear and simple way to see how studying Mathematics can support future success in education, employment, and everyday life.

The school’s diagram shows possible progression and destinations across several years. For the current 2027 selection list, use Year 11 subjects. Discuss prerequisites and future availability with the Senior School team.

Year 10 Mathematics Courses

Mathematics

Duration: Whole year Lessons per fortnight: 8

At Mickleham Secondary College, Mathematics teachers use a wide range of data and assessment tools to carefully place students into the course stream that best matches their current level of achievement, learning needs, and future goals. This targeted approach ensures that each student is appropriately supported and challenged, particularly in preparation for VCE pathways. In Mathematics, students are placed into streams aligned with the VCE options where they develop practical and analytical skills through real-world contexts. These include financial literacy (such as loans, investments, taxation, and budgeting), measurement in two and three-dimensional spaces, estimation, and data representation. In more advanced streams, students will also explore matrices and network graphs to model complex scenarios.

Our teachers take care of the placement process for families, ensuring students are set up for success in their senior years and beyond.

This structured preparation is essential, as many tertiary courses require a minimum set study score in Mathematics.
